WELCOME TO TURNER high SCHOOL

Turner High School, founded in 1916, is located in southern Wyandotte County within the city of Kansas City, Kansas. With approximately 1,100 students in grades 9-12, Turner High School competes in the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Class 5A and are know state-wide as the Turner Golden Bears. Turner High School offers many academic and athletic co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for student involvement.

Vision
Combining the community strengths with a highly qualified staff, we will implement a rigorous curriculum which includes technological competency, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and the acceptance of others while using instructional strategies that foster creativity and collaboration.

We believe all students should:

  • Understand Education is a life-long process.
  • Expect to achieve academic excellence in a challenging curriculum utilizing real world applications.

mark farrar, principal

Mark Farrar is the Principal at Turner High School. Mark earned his Bachelor's Degree from Emporia State University and a Masters in School Leadership from Baker University. Before coming to Turner he worked as an administrator in Tonganoxie and prior to that worked as both a teacher and administrator in Wichita Public Schools. Mark is excited to start his second year at Turner and looks forward to seeing these Golden Bears thrive and grow through the various opportunities available at Turner High School.

steve st. louis, ASSociate principal

Mr. Steve St. Louis is the Assistant Principal at Turner High School. Before coming to Turner, he was the Director of Special Education in North Kansas City and a building principal for 15 years prior to that. He is a University of Missouri-Columbia grad with a degree in Special Education. He earned his Master's and Ed Specialist degrees in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Dr. ALEX supple, Assistant principal

Dr. Alex Supple is an assistant principal at Turner High School. Alex completed her Educational Doctorate through University of Kansas, her Master of Arts in School Leadership at Benedictine College, and her Bachelor of English minoring in Secondary Education and Philosophy through University of Saint Mary. She previously worked in Atchison Public Schools as an ELA teacher and coach.

dr. frankie lizar, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Dr. Frankie Lizar is an assistant principal at Turner High School. Prior to becoming a proud Golden Bear in the fall of 2012, Frankie was an assistant high school principal in southwest Kansas and she also served as an instructional coach and English teacher at the middle school and high school levels. Frankie graduated with a bachelor's degree in English, two master's degrees in Education with an emphasis in teaching English as a second language with administration, specialist in educational leadership, and educational doctorate. Frankie prides herself in being a Washburn Ichabod, an Emporia Hornet, a Pittsburg Gorilla, an Arkansas Razorback, and a KU Jayhawk.

rick byers, athletic director

Mr. Rick Byers is the Athletic Director and head football coach for Turner High School. Byers has been one of the top coaches in the Kansas City metro area for more than two decades. He was at St. Pius X from 1987 to 2020. After a stretch as an assistant, he became the head coach in 1995 and led the Warriors to three state championships (1998, 2000, 2002), a state runner-up finish (1999), and a state quarterfinal appearance (2001). Additionally, his teams won 10 district titles and a number of conference championships. A graduate of Paola High School in Kansas, he played football one season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College and then three seasons at Pittsburg State (Kan.) University. Byers earned several Coach of the Year awards, including the 2001 Cecil Patterson and 1999 Kansas City Star and Kansas City Chiefs honors. Byers was named the Class 2 Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000. Byers also served as Pius’ athletic director for years.
