THS Students Represent District in Unified Bowling League

The program is co-supported by KSHSAA and Special Olympics Kansas.

This year, Turner High School students had the opportunity to participate in the Unified Bowling League, which is a program that is co-supported by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and Special Olympics Kansas.

The Turner Unified Bowling team consisted of students Tyler Boulware, Terrance McDonald, JJ Alston and Edward Pittman. Additionally, the team included Gabe Diaz and Bryan Lopez-Hernandez, student athletes from the Golden Bear Bowling team who participate with them. Teachers Larry Rodgers and Dawn Diaz helped coach the team at their practices and matches.

The purpose behind Unified Bowling is to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to participate in sports. “We've seen how sports can bring people together, and we want to give our students a chance to experience that in a way that celebrates everyone's abilities,” said Rodgers.

The season ran from September through November and bowlers practiced at Mission Bowl each week on Monday and competed in their matches on Wednesday.

Suzanne Alston cherished the time she spent watching her son and his teammates participate in Unified Bowling. “I loved how each student encouraged one another... they were so excited for each other. It was also amazing to see Gabe [Diaz] help guide, teach, and encourage the team.”

When asked about the highlight of the season, Mr. Rodgers shared that seeing the students socialize outside of the classroom and build relationships with other student athletes was the best part.

The team looks forward to next season!
