Meet Our Secondary Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Mr. Hagan!

The Kansas Teacher of the Year Award recognizes and utilizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. Each year, Turner’s schools select their building teacher of the year nominee. Then, a committee selects one secondary and one elementary teacher as the district nominees. Congratulations to this year’s Secondary Kansas Teacher of the Year nominee, Mr. David Hagan, science teacher at Turner High School!

Q: Why did you choose to go into the teaching field?

A: I chose to go into teaching because I have always been passionate about helping others learn, grow, and discover their potential. There’s something incredibly rewarding about positively impacting someone's life by sharing knowledge and guiding them through challenges. I enjoy creating a supportive and engaging environment where students can develop their skills, build confidence, and discover their potential. Teaching allows me to have an ever-changing profession that constantly exchanges ideas, growth, and discovery with others.

Q: What have you most enjoyed about teaching?

A: What I’ve most enjoyed from my years of teaching is witnessing the growth and development of my students, both academically and personally. It has been incredibly fulfilling to witness the transformation of someone who may have struggled initially to find confidence in their abilities and eventually succeed. I also love the relationships I’ve built with my students—those connections make teaching much more meaningful. I’ve enjoyed creating an environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and expressing themselves. Each year brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate and try new approaches, which keeps the job fresh and exciting. Another highlight has been the chance to work alongside outstanding colleagues, share ideas, and hone my skills.

Q: What do you most like about teaching in Turner?

A: I love that Turner is a community built around our schools. Within TUSD, I can see and feel my impact on my students and the community. The district’s commitment to empowering teachers to help their students aligns with my values, making this a great workplace. I am also surrounded by extraordinary colleagues who share my views and help elevate my teaching.
